Going green or making green? The effects of partisanship and inflation on environmental executive orders, 1945−2020

Abstract While a growing body of scholarship examines US presidential unilateralism, there remains less focus on policy‐specific areas unilateral action. Given environmental politics is particularly constrained and contentious issue area, understanding the conditions that affect frequency presidents' environment‐related activity requires more nuanced examination. As such, this study draws upon existing theories unilateralism to explore relationship between executive orders, Congress, economy, disasters in United States 1945 2020. A broad examination orders provides evidence suggest while Democratic presidents are likely compared Republican presidents, generally response higher inflation. second analysis using subset these data further indicates following technological increases when their partisanship changes from previous president. Collectively, findings serve broaden our current by providing important linkages power, environment, economy.
